HOW TO MAKE MONEY WITH ONLINE COURSE

It's no secret that the online training market is great - and it becomes greater.

The law firm of GM Insights studies learning valued at $ 165 billion in 2015. By 2023 it could exceed $ 240 billion. This is my complete guide to creating and selling an online course ... even if you do not have an idea for a still.

It's long. It is long. Here's what I'll cover ...

First, I'll cover how to find a sense of progress and make sure it is profitable (even if you are not an "expert" in anything). Then I'll help you create your course content (even if you are not a writer or have ever been in front of a camera).

Finally, I will show you a secret about how to promote and sell your course (even if you don't know about marketing or sales).

I break the process while 9 steps:
  • Commit to Creating a course
  • Choose a profitable idea
  • Test your idea
  • Create a Lesson Plan
  • Create Course Content
  • Get your online course
  • Set a price for your course
  • Ask students for your course
  • Start your course

I'll show you what to do at each stage. I also included additional resources for the different steps, like a course idea spreadsheet to step 2.

So let's jump right in. The first step is simple ...

STEP 1: Commit to the creation of a course

Want to create an online course?

You already know the answer.

Otherwise, you would not be reading this, right?

Right.

So commit to it - today.

Look…

Online courses are here. And they are here to stay. $ 240 billion by 2023 ... The question is who takes all this money?

A big chunk goes to the creators of the course.

But how can you really do with an online course?

Take Graham Cochran, who teaches music production and pulls in up to $ 75K per month.

Or Purna Duggirala that even back in 2014 made a million a year in fees. How? 'Or' What? Education Excel.

And yes, I run a company of seven sales figures courses, too.

But it's not that big success stories. It is on the small victories too ...

For example, you can easily create a course and earn an extra $ 500 or $ 1000 per month. What does this mean to you?

But let's be realistic.

It will take some work. Because there is no such thing as 100% of "passive" income. However, online courses are pretty nearby:

You see, just create the class once ...

... but you get paid again and again. With each student.

Often, the courses sold are always the same for years. One of the training programs I created in 2014 and still sell today (after a revision in 2016).

But…

"What if I have never done an online course before?"

This was my first class ... The videos are of low quality. They were grainy. And I even apparently could not afford a haircut.

But if…

"I'm not an expert! Who will buy my course? "

Do not worry - you do not need to be an expert. Because as creative courses you have two options:

Option 1: Be the expert

Yes, if you already have a skill or expertise, you can be "expert" and share that knowledge.

Let's say you are a certified massage therapist. Or you have an MBA in real estate. Or you're the Rock, Paper, Scissors world champion.

In this case, you - teach what you already know.

But there is another option ...

Option 2: Be the curious novice

You can also become a "curious beginner" and teach while learning. Here's what I mean ...

Choose a topic that interests you. Spend a weekend or two and read the first 3-selling books on the subject.

And BOOM. You are now enough of an expert. This means you will know more than 99% of people who will buy your course.

Do not think that's possible?

Joseph helps novelists write their Scrivener novel. And it is about $ 20 000 to $ 30,000 a month to do.

Let me rephrase. It's almost $ 1000 a day by showing how to use application novelists to write.

I know. Ridiculous.

Good…

When he decided to create an online course on Scrivener, he said:

I'm just using it casually. I was certainly not an expert. I've never written a book or anything.

And it continued ...

I bought all the books on Scrivener and studied everything I could find on it. I would study a particular feature, and then record a tutorial about it. Short 3-5 minute chunks especially so it was easier for me to create, but it turned out to be one of the most popular features.

Long story short, set its course for learning a feature, filming a video on the subject. Then he learned another feature and filmed another video to respect.

He learned that he created, and he became a great success. And that's why I love the story of Michael:

To create an online course on something - anything - and feel like "I know nothing of what I could teach"

It only takes 5 letters ...

TO LEARN

And as you learn to document the process. This way you can create a course on almost anything you're interested in.

This can be an advantage for your course. Why? Because the teacher who knows most is not always the best teacher ...

"Experts experts" are often victims of the curse of knowledge:

They skip important information because it is too obvious to them. And what happens? The student is left behind.

That's why a teacher who is just one step ahead of his students can sometimes create a more valuable course.

Needless to say, that I should always be honest about your experience and credentials.

But the truth is:

It is not necessary to be an expert in the world more important to teach a course.

Now…

People are literally creating courses on every conceivable topic:

  • Dated
  • Becoming an owner
  • How to fly a drone
  • Watercolor Painting
  • training spiritual life
  • Drafting
  • dog training
  • And more…

The question is: What did you teach?

Perhaps it is already clear in his mind. Or maybe you're still looking for an idea.

So let's move on to the next crucial step:

Be sure to choose an ideal assumption that ...

  • You're about passion
  • You can make money teach

STEP 2: Choose a cost-effective idea

Let's get specific:

You can create a course of something you already know. Or you can create a course is learning something.

But how to choose a specific idea? And how to make your idea is profitable? You do not want to spend time creating a course and then find out later that nobody wants to buy ...

In fact, this is the biggest mistake that new creators of the course do.

They create a course but do students really want to learn about the specific topic they chose. It's no wonder they struggle to attract students!

But I have everything covered ...

The first lesson about choosing a profitable idea is as follows:

If someone has already created the course you want to create, that's good news!

I know it's counterintuitive but bear with me ...

When it comes to an online course concept that has never been done before, that means one thing: there is probably no one interested in buying it.

Seriously.

You might think, "but the people who buy do need what I sell," and maybe they do it. However, the Internet is so great that if people need, and are willing to buy, there will be someone else to sell it.

As a matter of fact: if it comes with an idea for an online course, and you can not find someone selling a similar course to what you want from an offer, I would find a new direction.

Of course, there are specific strategies to figure out what to create an online course...

... and I will share more than those who are following you. For now, I want you to know this: If there is competition, that's a good thing.

With that said…

I have 3 strategies to help you find profitable ideas of the course:

  1. Make an inventory of the things that people already ask questions about or want your advice on.
  2. If you are a freelancer or are already running a service business: Take an inventory of things that your clients struggle with the most and ask questions about all the time. Find the pain - and eliminate it. This means going into the real world and finding the problems that people have. Then you can create an online course that solves these problems.
  3. Number 3 is my favorite strategy because it gets to the essence of why people buy online courses ...

The short answer is:

People buy the courses because they have a problem - and want to solve it.

Maybe they want to learn how to use complex software. They may not fit into your favorite jeans and want to lose weight. Maybe they are stressed and overwhelmed and want to take control of your schedule.

Whatever the case: people buy courses online because they have problems in their life's journey and they want to solve them.

I know this may sound like I'm oversimplifying, but it's that simple. Think of the problems of friends, colleagues and family members come to you ... listen.

And then see if you can create a repeatable course that helps people solve problems like that.

Sometimes it is an acute problem that people need to solve immediately. For example: How do you train for your puppy (I could have used that one ...). Other times it is a persistent problem. For example: How to have more confidence.

You can create a profitable course for both types of problems. But I can say from my experience is: The more specific problem to be solved, the easier it is to sell its course.

If you are at the point where you are choosing an idea, I have a worksheet useful to you to guide you through the steps. It is a simple technique I use for my own courses to find and eliminate pain.

Therefore, make sure you grab the worksheet. It only takes 15 min. to complete. And you walk with a specific procedure, the course cost-effective idea.

Idea download the Course Worksheet

Now…

What follows once you have an idea?

STEP 3: Testing Your Idea

To test whether your idea has a potential course it is important not just to ask your friends and family ...

The good news is:

If the strategy and the worksheet that you just shared, there is probably a market for your course is used. But still ...

Before spending a lot of time creating a course, let's make sure that we are building something that people will want to buy.

So how you test your idea?

There are 2 good ways ...

Test strategy # 1: Creating a free, mini-golf email

This is what I mean: Instead of creating videos, worksheets, and additional resources, simply create a mini-course, and deliver it via email.

You do not need a website for the course. No software or fancy design. Only deliver your course in e-mail format.

The best part? If you do this, you do not only validate your idea, you are also building an email list of prospective students for a paid course at the same time.

For more information about creating a mini-course email, I wrote a case study of one of my students, Guillermo, who did this with great success.

You can take a step further, too:

Test strategy # 2: Pre-Sell your course

What if your course could be sold before you finished making it?

Well, you can ...

Or you can create a sales page and ask people to "apply to buy" ...

... or you can put a "coming soon" page that explains what the course. Send it to your audience or run some ads to your sales page and see if you can sell.

You can set a start date in the future and actually sell it. Or you can create a dummy "buy now" and simply track how many users click on it (not perfect, but it will give you an idea of whether your idea has the potential to be a great success).

Both strategies - creating a mini-golf or email presale of course - are easy ways to test your idea.

Once you have tested your idea, the question is:

How can you create a course that students LOVE?

To create a murderer course, the following steps are crucial ...

STEP 4: Create an outline of the course

It's hard to create a course of several weeks when you're doing this for the first time. There is a lot of content to create ... and you want your content is top-notch!

That's why the key to creating the content of the course is surprising to start with a clear outline.

And if you are creating an email-free or paid during their first course, this is what is absolutely necessary to remember:

START SMALL.

Look…

When people create online courses, they think they need to create a little bit, deep online course that covers everything you know ...

... but that's a mistake.

Do not do that. It's a waste of time. Especially if you are just the beginning.

My first online course was 3 small videos and a worksheet. And yet, all helped kick start my business.

Just 3 short videos and some worksheets.

Seriously.

That said, how do you decide what will be covered in each of your course lessons?

Well, that's why they need a scheme. Think of it as their curriculum. And this is what I suggest you do:

First, look at the problem solves its course.

So ask yourself this:

What are all the steps that people need to take to achieve this goal?

And this is how the course is broken down into individual classes. For example…

Take a look at what the dating coach Francesca Hogi (Zippy courses using the software that makes creating and selling online courses child's play) is doing.

Francesca has a mini-course flirtation. It is only five classes (remember: keep it small!). She breaks the topic down into logical classes, bite-sized.

First, fear is approached flirting. Then we talk about how to get someone's attention, then how to talk to them, and so on.

Notice how each lesson the student brings a step closer to the ultimate goal of the course?

That's exactly what you should do in your scheme.

After breaking its course in a lesson in this way, you can do the same for each individual class.

Finally, one more thing important to delineate the course:

Not pack too much content in each lesson. Seriously.

For short courses, lessons can last 5 to 10 minutes. Certainly not create lessons that are more than 20 minutes. Otherwise, students are often disconnected, even if delivery is great.

The good news is that now that the purpose of each lesson is known, creating the actual content becomes very simple.

Therefore, we will see the creation of content in detail in the next step.

Step 5: Create the content of the course

Most of the online courses taught are packaged in video format. Also, I always include leaves, which help students to practice what they have learned.

So how do you create this content?

Well, first I want it is to know the following:

His first online course will not be so great, and that's fine.

This is why ...

When you want to create - and sell - online courses, you can look at other people who do and think, "Wow, your design is great, and so are their videos. I never could do that! "

But here's the problem:

You're comparing yourself to where we are now. And that's a mistake. It is necessary to compare where you are now to where we were at the beginning.

Poor lighting. Bad handwriting. the horrible hair ...

But those 3 videos went on to generate six-figure incomes. Why? Because, while the videos were of low quality, the content was great.

Now you might think, "Well, you're different!"

But I promise I'm not.

I recently interviewed another of my clients' Zippy courses, and he said. "It all starts with a blackboard in a chair"

Why?

He is an accountant and teaches business owners how to understand your numbers. In her video, which was what he did. Although it was just a silly white board resting on a chair, the content was valuable and helped kick start your business online course.

So the lesson is:
Do not become obsessed with the quality of production. Instead, focus on teaching valuable content - giving incredibly practical, step-by-step - and I will ensure your students will love its course.

This also means that the format of your course does not matter; it could be text, audio or video.

That said, the most popular format for students is a video:

You can record videos, either directly to the camera. Or you can record a video of the screen as you go through the slides in a presentation.

And you do not need to hire a high-end camera to shoot or edit your video lessons ... You can use your phone, and there are many tools and software available and easy to use.

For screen recordings, you can try Camtasia. Or, if you use a Mac, you can even use the Quicktime software for free.

Let me show you how. It's very simple. Here are the steps to make a screen recording of QuickTime:

  1. Open Quicktime Player:
  2. Select the "New Screen Recording" (from the "File" menu):
  3. Choose your microphone:
  4. Click the record button and click to start recording:
  5. Click to stop recording:
  6. Save the video:

Boom. You now know how to make their videos.

Let talk briefly about worksheets:

Worksheets must be PDF files, making it easy for people to download and print.

Simply create your document in Word or Pages. Then save it as a PDF file and you're done.

You can make your work leaves fillable. I do all my courses. But you do not have to.

When you have your content ... The next step is to get your online course!

STEP 6: Get your online course

Idea? Check!

Content? Check!

Time to get your online course, so you can start selling it!

The good news is:

What it used to be a real pain to get a running course. You had to upload their videos in one place. Create a membership site. And then he had to coordinate everything with your email service, too. Phew. It was a disaster…

But not anymore!

Today you need not be a technical genius for running its course:

Zippy courses make creating - and sell - your course a cinch!

After all, I built this software because I was frustrated with the other solutions was available. Needless to say, my own courses run on Zippy, and I am proud of the product we've built.

With Zippy, you can quickly and easily create your course page, protect its contents, sell your course, and manage their students.

I will not list all the features here. But you can read about some of the cool tools built to help make more sales course here:

5 Surprising ways to quickly increase online sales of golf

Or you can give yourself an opportunity Courses Zippy 😉

That said, you might wonder:

"Why should I make my own site?"

Instead of using a platform course, like Udemy or one of many others.

The answer?

This is to control.

With its own site, of course, you have full control over its course. price, design, students, a website dedicated (or a subdomain of your main website, as "course.yoursite.com") including, and so on ...

Personally, I just do not like to be them at the mercy of one company when it comes to my business.

Furthermore, I do not like sharing my income ...

(Unless handpicked partners.)

Which brings us to the final stage of building a successful business online course:

Sale and promotion of its course.

The first decision is: How much will you be charged?

STEP 7: Set the price of your course

For many new course creators, this is a difficult decision. But when discussing prices, you need to realize:

People like to buy courses - even when they get the same information for free.

It's counterintuitive, I know.

But while people "could" find what it plans to sell elsewhere.

... we still have to find.

You should also find out what information is legit ... and what information is garbage? And find the difference can be a full-time job, even the most intelligent people.

The alternative is often much easier: find someone who creates a course and they buy.

That's what I do. And what else does too? That's why the industry of the online course is exploding right now.

Time is one of the most valuable things you can never get back. Why waste time "figure out" what is good or not when you can buy a course.

In addition, paid courses also offer free information on things that simply can not:

A proven structure that leads to results
student support dedicated
Personal responsibility
A community of like-minded students (this is huge)

And much more. If you have ever joined a high-quality course, you've probably experienced this yourself. So not charge less when you sell your own course.

To help you set a price, I suggest you use a very simple rule price. I call it the "approach similar result."

Is that how it works:

Think of the ideal result to go through its course. And then ask yourself, "What would someone have to pay to get the same results with a different method?" This can be likened to other courses, software, hiring someone to do it, or hiring a coach.

You should also consider the "cost of doing nothing" for their students. Let's say someone helps clean up your diet, lose weight and live a healthier life both. What is really worth? Much more than if you think of your course as a collection of videos and PDF files ...

That said, do not obsess over-optimization of the price. Initially, simply place it in the right price range.

Do they want more tips on the prices of their courses?

Here are some tactics more advanced fixing prices:

Why discount is for dummies
How to price silly mistake people make
Converts the best: $ 100, $ 99 or $ 97?
Price? Check

Now you can go to ...

STEP 8: Get students for course

Remember, you do not want to build a field and then go looking for students ...

You should know that their students are - and have an idea where you will find - before spending a lot of time building a huge course. That is why in steps 2 and 3 help you choose a profitable idea and try it first.

However, getting students from his course is an ongoing process. And as your audience grows, so does your business of course.

Let's talk about how to do so.

The best way to get students, of course, is to get signed up for your email list first. Why? Because email is still the easiest way to make online sales.

The good news is that you do not need a hearing to make good money with an online course ...

Let's say your goal is to make $ 10,000. If you are selling $ 100, of course, you will have to pitch around 3,300 people (assuming an average conversion rate of 3%).

Where will you find 3,000 people?

If that sounds like a lot, I promise you, it's much easier than you think. And of course, you do not need 3,000 people. Get your first 100 subscribers. Then your first 500, 1000, and you're on the right track.

And if you already have a mailing list ... Great! Even if only a few hundred people - Heck, if only a few dozen people - it's a great start.

To build your email list can use my strategy to promote the proven ready to reach 5,000 subscribers. Way more than 100,000 people have downloaded this eBook and started his email list with it. I grab him, do this:

Free eBook: How to 5,000 subscribers

Once you have a list of 1,000 people or so, you are ready to launch its course. And that is the final step!

STEP 9: Launch your course

You have a course. You are building your audience. Time to sell!

Now…

Maybe it sounds "sales" as a bad word to you. Or simply have no experience selling anything, so I do not know where to start ... But do not worry. I will share a simple formula throwing 3 steps with you here.

First, you may be wondering:

"Do I have to sell as 'Evergreen' or my registration is open and closed?"

Personally, I prefer registration opening and closing, because most of my sales come from my email list. But both options are viable. I'll explain ...

Does your course to solve the problem of "acute"?

If people want and need an immediate solution, it is often better to sell and evergreen. For example, a course on "How to use macros in Excel."
People who may need a solution now, so if you do wait, you may lose a lot of students.

Or it is that your address been a "persistent" problem?

For courses that address large, persistent problems - things that people have been thinking for months or years - launches are great because you can build anticipation. Something like "How to become a morning person" falls into this category.

Makes sense? Cold.

Now, no matter what you sell its course, here it is ...

3-Step Formula Golf Pitch:

This simple formula leads people through three distinct phases of the sales process:

The problem, desire, and solution.
  • Describes the problem:
Remember, your resolve, of course, pain or problem. Therefore, in the absence of its implementation, it is necessary to remind people of the pain they are facing right now.

Sounds negative, I know. But you have to show potential customers that you understand their problems and their struggles. In describing his pain in detail, which helps you connect with potential buyers.
  • Create desire:
Now it is the time to create the desire, showing the contrast between the world as it is (step 1) and the world as it could be. And that's what must be described in this way: describe the pleasure!

You do not have to mention its course yet. You can use phrases like "Imagine if ..." or "Image of a world where ..." and then talk about the outcome of their course delivery.
  • The tone of your solution:
Your potential customers are aware of the problem and want to find a solution. So now is the time to prove that you can help. Tell them about your course, what is covered and how it will help.

It's even better if you can show people how it is going to help. For example, you could share a key idea of the course. Or share a case study of a client or student.

The important point here is to create a contrast between before and after the first. Then enter your course as the solution that will get you from pain to pleasure.

When you look at the sales this way, it is not so crazy, right?

Now…

I know, we've covered a lot of ground. So you may want to bookmark this page.

Is that how it works…

My final advice is:

Learning from beneficiaries who have already done what you want to do

I know that seems self-service at this time, but it's important: you could try to solve everything on your own. And you can end up wasting a lot of time (and money) does.

OR…

You can simply convert someone who already did and direct access to their success following their advice.
